how one visit works

What happens while you're here

For eligible cases the scan, the design and the fitting all happen in one appointment. It usually takes about two hours. We give you the actual time when we book. If your tooth needs a lab or a specialist step, we tell you at the examination — not partway through.

Step 1 of 6

We make sure you're comfortable first

The same start as a filling. Once you're comfortable we clear the damage and shape the tooth. Tell us if you're nervous and we'll go at your pace.

Step 2 of 6

You see what we see

Digital impressions instead of a tray of putty, so there's nothing to set in your mouth and nothing to gag on. The images come up while you watch.

Step 3 of 6

Your tooth is drawn on screen

We shape the restoration from the scan, matching it to the tooth beside it and to the way you bite. You can watch it happen rather than just hear about it.

Step 4 of 6

It's made while you wait

The block goes into the unit in our office. This is the waiting part and it's the only one. Most people read or use their phone while they wait.

Step 5 of 6

We check how it sits before anything is permanent

It goes in before it goes on. We check how it meets the teeth above it and how it feels when you close. Nothing is fixed in place until it fits.

Step 6 of 6

You go back to your day

We bond it in place before you leave, so nothing has to be repeated. No temporary crown to look after and nothing to come loose afterwards.

Five cases treated at Dynamic Dental Arts. Use the arrows to look through them at your own pace. Individual results vary and not every case is suitable for same-day treatment — we'll tell you what's realistic at the examination.

Before you look

These are clinical photographs. The lips are held back so the gums and the whole length of each tooth are visible. They're close-up and unretouched, because that's the only way to judge the work honestly. Use the arrow when you're ready.

same-day restorations

What we can make the same day

Designed and made right here in our Wayne office, with the shade matched to the teeth either side of it. A CEREC dentist keeps the scanner and the milling unit on site, so your crown is designed and fitted in one visit rather than sent away. Some cases are still better made in a dental lab and we'll tell you when that's true for yours.

CEREC Same-Day Crowns

The most common one-visit crown. Designed, made and fitted in one appointment for eligible cases.

Same-Day Dental Bridges

Fills the space left by a missing tooth, using the teeth on either side. Many are same-day.

Same-Day Veneers

Covers chips, gaps, cracks and worn edges on teeth that show when you smile. You see the plan first.

Same-Day Inlays & Onlays

A partial crown. An inlay sits inside the tooth; an onlay covers a cusp too. Replaces silver fillings.

cost and insurance

What it costs and how you'll know

What a crown costs comes down to which tooth it is, how much healthy tooth is left and what your plan covers. We check your benefits before anything is booked, put the number in writing and go through it with you — see payment options for the plans and financing we accept.

If you have insurance

We take most major plans and check your coverage before anything is booked, including whether you've met your deductible.

If you don't have insurance

You get the same written estimate before you agree to anything, so you know the full cost up front, not after.

If you're paying over time

You can spread the cost through CareCredit or Cherry. Ask the office and we'll go through the options with you personally.

Plans we accept include Delta Dental, Cigna, Aetna, Guardian, MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, Principal and United Concordia. Coverage varies by policy, so we check yours before anything is booked.

Not sure what your plan covers? Call the office and we'll check it with you.

common questions

What patients ask before they book

The questions patients ask most before deciding on same-day treatment.

Does “same-day” mean I'll be seen today?

No. It means the work is done in one appointment instead of two: we scan, design and make your crown while you're here, so you leave with the permanent crown rather than a temporary one. Call the office and we'll book the first appointment that suits you.

My tooth hurts — how soon can I be seen?

Call the office. (973) 595-8700 reaches us directly and we'll find you the soonest appointment we have rather than leaving you waiting on a form. We can also tell you what'll help in the meantime.

Can I get a crown in one day?

For a lot of teeth, yes. It comes down to how much healthy tooth is left, where it sits and how it meets the teeth above it. We can tell at the examination, before anything starts — and if yours is better served by a lab-made crown we'll say so then, not partway through.

Do same-day crowns look natural?

Yes. We pick the shade against the teeth either side of it, so it blends in rather than standing out. You see it on screen before it's made, then we try it in and hold it next to your own teeth. Nothing gets bonded until the colour looks right to you as well as to us.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The same as having a filling. You're made comfortable before anything starts and we go at your pace — tell us if you're nervous and we'll take it slowly.

How long do same-day crowns last?

That depends more on the bite than on the crown: how you grind or clench, how the tooth meets the one above it and how it's cared for day to day. It's bonded to the healthy tooth that's left, so looking after that tooth is what protects it. We check it at every routine visit.

Are same-day crowns as good as lab crowns?

For the cases we recommend them for, yes. Yours is cut from one solid block rather than built up in layers, so there's no seam to stain or come apart. Some bites and some larger repairs are still better served by a lab-made crown and we'll say so.

Can you make a crown for a dental implant?

Yes. An implant crown is one of the restorations we make here, so a crown on an existing implant can often be fitted in the same appointment. We check the implant and the bite first and tell you what's realistic before anything starts.

What if my new crown feels high?

Call the office. A bite that feels high or catches is a quick adjustment and we'd much rather see you than have you live with it.

Do I have to be a patient already?

No. Most people who find this page are new to us and booking here is how you become a patient. Bring your insurance card if you have one and we handle the rest.

Send it over and we'll call you back

Tell us what happened and we'll ring you to book a time. We'll look at the tooth, say whether it can be finished in one visit and put the cost in writing before you agree to anything.
